DB1986–1989
The hunt for the seven balls, before the sky became a battlefield.
01DBThe first complete hunt for the seven balls, from deep in the mountains to Pilaf’s castle. This is the saga that sets the rules of the world: the radar, the single wish, the dragon that does not negotiate, and the full moon that turns a child into a disaster.
02DBTraining under Master Roshi, then the first major tournament. The series stops being a road movie and becomes a martial arts story with rules, a ring and a ranking.
03DBA military organisation hunts the balls with industrial means. The longest saga of the first Dragon Ball, the one that introduces towers, bases, paid mercenaries and Goku’s first real defeat.
04DBLocating the last ball means paying a fortuneteller in fights. A short but load-bearing saga: it ties death, the afterlife and combat into a triangle the whole franchise reuses.
05DBThe Crane School steps in and sets its doctrine against the Turtle School. The tournament becomes a clash of schools as much as of individuals.
06DBThe tone flips: a freed demon kills established characters and the dragon itself vanishes along with its creator. This is the saga that teaches the reader the balls have an origin, and therefore a limit.
07DBThree years of training later, the tournament gathers the whole adult cast and works as the hinge into the Z era. The last saga of the first Dragon Ball.
Emperor Pilaf saga
01The road of the seven ballsEpisodes 1–8
Meeting Bulma, crossing the desert, a detour to the turtle’s village and the first balls gathered.
02Pilaf’s castleEpisodes 9–13
The group gets outpaced, loses the balls, and the full moon settles the outcome instead of anyone else.
DBZ1989–1996
Earth finds out it is just one target among many.
01DBZVegeta saga
Goku learns where he comes from at the same moment he learns someone is coming for him. Thirty-five episodes that push Dragon Ball from an Earth-bound martial arts story into a tale of space conquest, and cost the group half its fighters.
GT1996–1997
An animated sequel with no manga behind it: the parallel branch.
01GTSeven balls of another kind, scattered across the galaxy, with a new constraint: fail to gather them in time and the wishing planet blows up. A deliberate return to the travelling format.
DBS2015–2018
The canonical sequel: twelve universes, gods, and a ceiling pushed higher.
01DBSBattle of Gods
Fourteen episodes to reinstall the series and raise the ceiling one notch: above the known gods sit a God of Destruction, his angel attendant, and a scale where raw power is no longer enough. The pace is deliberately slow at first, domestic even, before the sky opens up.
DAIMA2024–2025
The last project Toriyama followed: back to adventure, at small scale.
01DAIMAA wish makes the Z Fighters young again without asking, and the group heads into the Demon Realm looking for an explanation. Twenty episodes that give the story its small scale back: walking, bargaining, hiding, and only then fighting.
SDBHsince 2018
Promotional series for a card game: outside continuity, and open about it.
01SDBHThe card game’s first animated mission: an arena planet holds fighters from several continuities and forces them to face each other.
KAI2009–2015
Dragon Ball Z re-edited in high definition, at the manga’s pace.
01KAIRaditz’s arrival, Gohan’s training and the fight against Nappa and Vegeta, tightened into sixteen episodes at the manga’s pace.
02DBZDeparture for Namek, home world of the balls and of Piccolo, where three camps want the same thing. The saga installs Frieza as the franchise’s yardstick and ends on its most quoted transformation.
03DBZAn anime-only interlude with no manga equivalent: a film antagonist returns to Earth while Goku is still away.
04DBZA teenager from a ruined future arrives with a date and two names. The saga turns the Red Ribbon Army into a long-term threat and introduces time travel as a narrative problem rather than a fix.
05DBZAn organism built from the cells of the best fighters stages its own tournament. This is the saga that shifts the hero’s burden onto Gohan and closes the alternate-future arc.
06DBZA short anime-only interlude: Goku, still dead, enters a tournament for the deceased while Earth lives through seven years of peace.
07DBZThe last and longest saga of the Z era: a reunion tournament derails into the awakening of a weapon sealed for millions of years. It introduces fusions, the hierarchy of the Supreme Kais, and ends on the wish that closes the manga.
Saiyan saga
01Raditz arrivesEpisodes 1–6
A Saiyan warrior lands, reveals Goku’s real name and abducts Gohan. Settling it takes an alliance with Piccolo and a price nobody had considered.
02Snake WayEpisodes 7–20
Two trainings run in parallel: Goku runs a million kilometres toward the North Kai, while Gohan survives alone in the wild under Piccolo’s distant watch.
03Vegeta and Nappa on EarthEpisodes 21–35
The countdown hits zero. The Z Fighters hold the line until Goku climbs back, and the bill is heavy before the main duel even starts.
02GTA parasite from a people wiped out by the Saiyans takes revenge by seizing control of its killers. GT’s strongest arc, because its antagonist has a clear motive.
03GTThe gates of hell open and defeated antagonists climb back up alongside a cyborg fusion. A short saga, built as a bridge to the finale.
04GTGT’s best idea: every wish granted since the beginning has left a debt, and that debt takes the shape of seven dragons. The franchise’s central device finally turns on the people using it.
02DBSReturn of Frieza
What is left of Frieza’s army uses the balls to bring their employer back. The return mostly serves to show what four months of training can do to a character who had never trained at all.
03DBSUniverse 6 vs Universe 7
Two Gods of Destruction settle a dispute with a five-on-five tournament between universes. This is the saga that properly opens Super’s cosmology and introduces the Saiyans of Universe 6.
04DBSGoku Black and Zamasu
Trunks returns from a future wrecked by an opponent wearing Goku’s face. Super’s darkest saga, and the one that treats time travel as an offence somebody eventually punishes.
05DBSTournament of Power
Eight universes, eighty fighters, one arena and forty-eight minutes: eliminated universes are erased. Super’s climax, and the largest melee in the franchise.
06DBSFilmDragon Ball Super: Broly (film)
The film that writes Broly into the continuity: the fall of Planet Vegeta told from Bardock’s side, exile on Vampa, then a fight on the ice that forces Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta. Frieza, once again, plays the recruiter.
Moro
A ten-million-year-old sorcerer breaks out of the galactic prison and devours planets’ energy. Goku and Vegeta join the Patrol; one learns Ultra Instinct from Merus, the other Spirit Fission on Yardrat. Exclusive to Toyotarō’s manga.
Granolah and the Heeters
The last Cerealian wishes to become the strongest in the universe to avenge his people, wiped out by Saiyans in Frieza’s service. Vegeta learns Ultra Ego from Beerus; the saga closes on Frieza’s return as Black Frieza.
09DBSFilmDragon Ball Super: Super Hero (film and manga)
The Red Ribbon Army is reborn around Dr. Hedo and his Gamma androids; Piccolo and Gohan, left alone on Earth, carry the film. The manga extends it with a prologue and an epilogue — the last chapters published in Akira Toriyama’s lifetime.
God of Destruction Beerus saga
01Seven years of peaceEpisodes 1–4
A gentle restart: odd jobs, family life, training at the North Kai’s place, and the waking of a god who dreamed of an opponent.
02The party on the linerEpisodes 5–9
Beerus turns up at Bulma’s birthday. The Z Fighters try to contain him one by one, and the party becomes a demonstration of just how wide the gap is.
03The Super Saiyan God ritualEpisodes 10–14
A transformation obtained through a collective ritual rather than rage: six Saiyans in a circle, a single beneficiary, and a fight in the upper atmosphere.
Frieza’s resurrection saga
01Sorbet’s wishEpisodes 15–19
Sorbet and Tagoma divert Earth’s balls to bring Frieza back, who puts himself through four months of training — the first of his life — before returning for revenge.
02Golden FriezaEpisodes 20–27
The army lands on Earth, the Z Fighters hold the line, then Goku and Vegeta face a golden form whose stamina never caught up with its power.
Universe 6 tournament saga
01Champa’s wagerEpisodes 28–32
Beerus’s twin proposes a tournament whose stake is Universe 6’s Earth; the team is recruited, Monaka included, and the Super Dragon Balls are revealed.
02The tournament on the Nameless PlanetEpisodes 33–46
Botamo, Frost, Magetta, Cabba and Hit against Universe 7’s team; Zeno’s arrival ends the tournament and raises the question that will drive what follows.
Future Trunks saga
01Goku BlackEpisodes 47–60
Trunks’s future is laid waste by a Goku with a foreign ki; first trips in the time machine and the reveal of Black’s identity: Zamasu, apprentice Supreme Kai of Universe 10.
02Fused ZamasuEpisodes 61–76
Black and Future Zamasu merge into an immortal being that spills over the universe; Trunks lands the blow, Zeno erases the timeline, and Beerus punishes time travel.
Universe Survival saga
01Recruiting Universe 7Episodes 77–96
The exhibition match, the announcement that losing universes will be erased, and the assembly of the team of ten — Frieza included, brought back from Hell for a day.
02The Tournament of PowerEpisodes 97–131
Forty-eight minutes in the arena: Universe 7 falls one by one down to Goku against Jiren, the completed Ultra Instinct, and Android 17’s wish restoring every erased universe.
Galactic Patrol Prisoner saga
01New Namek
Moro targets Namek’s balls; Goku and Vegeta’s first defeat, and the sorcerer recovers his full magic.
02The battle for Earth
The escapees strike Earth; Goku returns with an incomplete Ultra Instinct, Merus sacrifices himself, and Moro ends up fused with the planet itself.
Demon Realm saga
01The wish behind their backsEpisodes 1–6
Noticing the change, digging into its cause and leaving for a world nobody has a map of.
02Crossing the realmEpisodes 7–20
Demon factions, local balls and a hierarchy to climb: the second half is as much an exploration adventure as a fighting one.
02SDBHA core from a destroyed universe becomes the pretext for clashes between Gods of Destruction and fighters from several worlds.
03SDBHThe series pushes the game’s premise all the way: spare universes, character variants and match-ups impossible anywhere else.
04SDBHA mission built around a divine tournament, with entrants recruited from every continuity the game has produced.
02KAINamek, the Ginyu Force and Frieza without the original broadcast’s detours: the re-edit removes most of the waiting episodes.
03KAIFrom Frieza’s return to the Cell Games, Kai’s first wave ends on Goku’s sacrifice and Gohan’s victory.
04KAIThe second wave, produced three years after the first, gives the manga’s final saga the same re-edit treatment.
