You reach it by walking a million kilometres of suspended road, which is already the first part of the training. The ground is a few hundred metres across and its gravity pins anyone who arrives unprepared.

This is where the Kaiô-ken and the Spirit Bomb are taught, and where the story establishes that a dead man can keep improving.

Planet Vegeta is described as a vassalised warrior monarchy whose population supplied a planetary clearance service. Its gravity, ten times Earth’s, explains its inhabitants’ physical advantage.

Its destruction is presented by Frieza as a meteor accident, a lie that structures several characters’ motivation across several series.

In Universe 7, Sadala vanished before the story begins and the Saiyans settled on the planet that took their king’s name. In Universe 6 it still exists and hosts a society that avoided vassalisation.

That symmetry works as a narrative argument: the same race, two trajectories, no inevitability.

Dragon Ball’s Earth mixes megacities, deserts, isolated villages and capsule technology that fits a house in a pocket. Its cosmological peculiarity is having inherited a guardian from Namek, and therefore a wish-granting device no other planet in the quadrant owns.

That anomaly explains why it is coveted by actors with no interest whatsoever in its inhabitants.

Populated by physically weak but technically advanced inhabitants when it comes to movement, Yardrat barely appears on screen yet leaves the franchise one of its most-used abilities. The contrast is deliberate: the story’s best mobility technique does not come from a people of fighters.

The Kais manage galactic quadrants and act as intermediaries between mortals and the rest of the hierarchy. Above them, the Supreme Kais hold responsibility for creation, mirroring the Gods of Destruction.

The story mostly uses them as information relays: they are the ones who explain to the viewer what the characters do not yet know.

Majins are not a matter of biology but of magic: their bodies reform, split, absorb opponents and keep their abilities. That plasticity makes them nearly impossible to remove by force.

Their existence introduces a threat that does not obey the usual power scale but rules of its own.

Namekians reproduce without a partner, live on water, regenerate lost body parts and can assimilate another of their kind while keeping their own identity. One particular line, called the dragon clan, produces the wish devices.

That capacity makes their planet a permanent target, and their diaspora a cosmological stake rather than a mere biographical detail.

Saiyans are identified by their tail, essential to the Great Ape transformation under a full moon, and by a recovery capacity that turns every defeat into a net gain. Their society was organised around a contract: clearing planets for an outside employer.

That biological quirk explains the narrative structure of the whole franchise: a character who survives a massacre comes out stronger, so the story can keep climbing indefinitely.

Dragon Ball’s humans have no tail, no regeneration and no exceptional energy reserve. They build capsules, radars, ships and time machines, and still produce fighters capable of inventing techniques the superior races do not have.

The series keeps them in the story precisely because they set the human scale of the stakes.

The Crane School shares the Turtle School’s origins but draws the opposite doctrine from them: elimination is part of the service, and the commission justifies the act. Its techniques are effective and costly to whoever uses them.

Tien’s move from one camp to the other is the real stake of the 22nd tournament.

The school’s doctrine takes few words: total physical training, useful work as a method, and fighting as a way of surpassing yourself rather than earning money. Its emblem is worn on the back of the uniform.

It opposes the Crane School point by point, which teaches the same techniques within a logic of contracts.

Every Ginyu Force member owns a specialty: pure speed, brute strength, mental abilities, body swapping. Their choreographed posing is one of the few moments where the franchise openly mocks its own conventions.

Their arrival marks the point where Frieza’s army stops underestimating its opponents.

The Galactic Patrol arrests ordinary criminals, escorts transfers and runs high-security prisons. Against the franchise’s antagonists it plays the part of an administration that records the damage and asks for help from civilians far stronger than itself.

Its presence is useful to the story: it reminds you a normal world exists around the fights.

Taught by the North Kai, the technique does not use its caster’s energy but the surrounding world’s, which makes it theoretically unlimited and practically unusable in close combat: the charge demands several minutes of stillness.

It also carries a moral constraint rare in the story: it only works properly in the hands of someone the planet agrees to feed.

Hakai does not destroy physically: it removes the target from existence, with no debris and no shockwave. It is the story’s only ability that cannot be countered with power, only by interrupting its execution.

Its use is bounded by the office of whoever performs it, which makes it an administrative act as much as an attack.

The principle is simple and brutal: push all energy output beyond what the tissues can take, in stages announced out loud. Each notch raises the power and the internal damage in the same proportion.

It is the first technique in the franchise to formalise the idea of a cost, which makes it more interesting than the transformations that follow it.

The technique requires gathering energy between the palms before releasing it as a continuous beam. Its strength is its modularity: it can be fired one-handed, in bursts, at point-blank range, or used as propulsion.

Goku learns it from a single viewing, which sets the learning rule for the whole universe: observation is enough if the body can keep up.

Krillin’s invention, the Destructo Disc is the best human answer to power inflation: it does not try to outmatch the opponent, only to find a cutting plane. Several major antagonists lose a limb to it.

It is the textbook example of what Earthlings bring to the story: technique where others bring volume.

A Crane School technique, the Tri-Beam produces an effect far above its user’s actual level, provided they accept leaving part of their life behind. Tien makes it his answer to opponents out of his class.

Alongside the Evil Containment Wave, it is the best illustration of the cost principle in this universe.

The Evil Containment Wave locks an opponent inside a container sealed with a talisman, and costs its user their life. It is the only known answer to certain enemies force cannot remove.

Its presence is structural: it establishes that some problems are not solved by climbing the power scale.

Presented as a legend before it appears, the transformation originally requires a major emotional shock combined with a sufficient energy level. The later stages extend the principle: static electricity, muscle mass, longer hair.

The franchise deliberately makes it routine, which forces it to invent the divine register in order to find a ceiling again.

The ritual requires six pure Saiyan hearts channelling their energy into a seventh. The result is not greater mass but energy of another nature, denser and harder to perceive for anyone untrained in it.

It is the pivot of Dragon Ball Super: from here on, progression is about control rather than amplitude.

The technique does not aim at coordinates but at an energy signature: you cannot go somewhere unless someone is there. That limitation makes it a clean narrative tool that does not solve everything.

It comes from a physically weak people, a detail the franchise never underlines but which matters.

Technically an angel discipline rather than a Saiyan transformation, Ultra Instinct separates action from intention: the dodge and the strike fire before the analysis. Whis lays out the principle long before the story shows it.

Its cost is mental rather than energetic, which explains why a fighter used to thinking mid-combat struggles to reach it.
