The hunt for the seven balls, before the sky became a battlefield.

Fact sheet
1986–1989
Broadcast
DB
A boy with a monkey tail lives alone in the mountains, guarding an orange sphere without knowing its worth. Bulma turns up with a radar she built to track those spheres, and the curiosity becomes a journey: gather seven of them and a wish-granting dragon appears.
The series first moves like a road adventure, through deserts, fishing villages and the castle of a pocket-sized tyrant, then tightens around the Tenkaichi Budôkai, the martial arts tournament that becomes its backbone. This is where the show teaches you to read a fight: the stance, the breathing, the gap in class.
Across three years on air, Dragon Ball shifts from adventure comedy to hard martial arts drama, through the Red Ribbon Army and then King Piccolo, and ends on a tournament where Goku is no longer a child. Everything the sequels exploit is already set up here.

Story files
01DBThe first complete hunt for the seven balls, from deep in the mountains to Pilaf’s castle. This is the saga that sets the rules of the world: the radar, the single wish, the dragon that does not negotiate, and the full moon that turns a child into a disaster.
02DBTraining under Master Roshi, then the first major tournament. The series stops being a road movie and becomes a martial arts story with rules, a ring and a ranking.
03DBA military organisation hunts the balls with industrial means. The longest saga of the first Dragon Ball, the one that introduces towers, bases, paid mercenaries and Goku’s first real defeat.
04DBLocating the last ball means paying a fortuneteller in fights. A short but load-bearing saga: it ties death, the afterlife and combat into a triangle the whole franchise reuses.
05DBThe Crane School steps in and sets its doctrine against the Turtle School. The tournament becomes a clash of schools as much as of individuals.
06DBThe tone flips: a freed demon kills established characters and the dragon itself vanishes along with its creator. This is the saga that teaches the reader the balls have an origin, and therefore a limit.
07DBThree years of training later, the tournament gathers the whole adult cast and works as the hinge into the Z era. The last saga of the first Dragon Ball.
