Biography
Yamcha shows up as a competent opponent, lethal with a sword and paralysed in front of a woman. That contradiction makes him instantly likeable, and settles him into the role he will keep: the serious fighter the series outgrows faster than the others.
His death in the Saiyan saga is one of the most effective of the Z era, because it happens in a fight already won. It is also the moment the viewer understands that the tournament format no longer protects anyone.
